Publié en partenariat avec l’Abbaye de Jumièges et Doors à l’occasion de l’exposition du même titre, "Les flots écoulés ne reviennent pas à la source" donne à voir le regard de treize artistes contemporains sur la rivière en Chine. De l’héritage d’une tradition picturale chinoise où un paysage idéalisé semble suspendu dans le temps (peinture de « montagne et d’eau ») aux accélérations de la modernité et leurs conséquences sur la nature et l’environnement, en passant par des récits visuels reprenant à leur compte sa puissance évocatrice, la rivière a constitué ces vingt dernières années un motif d’inspiration récurrent pour les photographes, Chinois ou venus photographier en Chine.
Published in partnership with the Jumièges Abbey and Doors on the occasion of the exhibition of the same title, “Flowing Waters Never Return to the Source. Photographers Gazing at the River in China” centres upon the Chinese river, a seminal theme in contemporary photography in China, as seen through the eyes of thirteen visual artists. From the re-appropriation of traditional Chinese painting where idealized landscapes seem suspended in time (“mountain-water”) to the accelerated modernization of the country and its consequences for nature and the environment, and visual narratives using its evocative power, the river has formed a recurring motif of inspiration for photographers in China over the past twenty years - whether Chinese or otherwise.
